Information for the start of term
At 8:45am school will start and it will finish at 3:25pm. Children arriving late must be signed in at the office by the adult bringing them in before being brought into class. Children wait with their adults and enter the outdoor area for their respective classroom when the gate is opened.
When the gate has been opened, please bring pupils to the exterior classroom door. The children can then say goodbye to their adults outside and come on in! Staff members will support the children with putting their items away inside the classroom and help children settle into class.
Please do not allow children (pupils, siblings) to play with any school equipment as this is set up for learning before or at the end of the school day. We make a distinction between learning and play - and often we have found that resources are broken or left in a mess when set up for activities which has a negative impact on learning.
At hometime, please wait outside the external door to your child’s classroom once the gate has been opened.
PE will be every Monday (Miss Evans’Class)/ Tuesday (Mrs Riley’s Class) - children should come to school in PE kit suitable for the weather on the day. Children should wear dark tracksuit/shorts, a white t-shirt, sensible trainers.
*All children are expected to participate unless they have provided their teacher with a letter.*Please ensure all earrings are removed for your child’s PE day, and that their hair is tied back.*
Children don't need to bring much in to school with them each day. They should have their:
- coat
- a book bag or other similar small bag (we don't have space for large bags)
- a sports-style water bottle (no screw cap or wide neck bottles please as we have lots of spills otherwise).
- a healthy snack (fruit or vegetable only)
- a pair of wellies that can be kept in school for outdoor learning when it is wet (not expected to be in school until after the parents meeting)
- Waterproof clothing (a waterproof coat /over trousers or a puddle suit for outdoor learning (not expected to be in school until after the parents meeting)
*All food must be completely free of even traces of nuts or seeds, due to significant health concerns of other students*
If children bring a lunch box, there is a space/shelf provided for them as they walk in the room.
Homework
- We will send words and sounds home and to practise reading and spelling via Seesaw regularly. When we do assessments during the year we send sounds in paper form in bags that can be cut up into flashcards to support gap sounds.
- Children are expected to read their books as part of their homework as much as possible.
- Reading records are checked in school every week. Please ensure your child has this with them. When the days for reading squad are confirmed we will let you know which day is the priority for having this in school.
- Phonics ebooks are available (contact the office via info@highfieldhall.derbyshire.sch.uk for the attention of Mrs Hayward and Mrs Higham for more information).
- For now continue reading books on the stage the children were before the holidays of you have access to the ebook or recap the phonics sounds they worked on previously.. Staff in class will assess your child’s reading as soon as they have settled the children into year 1 and supported them with any changes involved for them. Please be aware that this may take a few weeks but we will get them to you as soon as we can.
We will be having a parents meeting with more information about year 1 at the start of term. Information about this will come in September!
