Our curriculum is built around 5 key themes which run through school, underpinned by great texts, and our core values. The key themes are: Our place in the world, Who are we and where do we come from?, Nurturing nature, Exploring new worlds, and What are we fighting for? Each topic is built around our spine of fantastic books that support our reading and writing, and which tie in with the foundation subjects.
As the children move through school, the topics that they study have one or two of these key themes as a focus, where key content is revisited and then which will build understanding over time. For example when studying the “Roman Britain” topic, the children will learn about the idea of empire, invasion and settlement. This will be revisited and built up when studying “The Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the kingdom of England”, and again when studying World War 2. These will all be part of the “Who are we and where do we come from?” key theme, where children develop an understanding of how modern Britain came to be as it is. Some of the themes run throughout every year group explicitly (Our place in the world, Who are we and where did we come from? and Nurturing Nature), whereas others have a broader scope lower down school (e.g. exploring in general, learning turn taking and following rules) before these become more explicit higher up school.
Each topic is underpinned by a knowledge organiser (outlining the critical knowledge and vocabulary, supported by visuals), as well as setting out the wider knowledge we expect the children to know for each subject. We have progression documents for each subject, showing how the skills and knowledge for each subject build over time towards the key theme end points (see links below). Many of these topics are built around threshold concepts ('big' ideas or skills which run throughout each topic).
